The lowest possible level of familiarity is having no experience with mental illness. Level of familiarity increases when the relationship intimacy increases (i.e. acquaintance, co-worker, friend, family member, parent, provider). The highest possible level of familiarity is personally experiencing psychiatric symptoms or having lived experience.
